Cat killed by dogs on 35th Street
11/04/2015 9:31 AM by John M
From Christy:
On Sunday, October 25, a beloved cat, Goldilocks, was attacked and killed by two unattended Huskies in the 700 block of N. 35th St. This type of irresponsible dog ownership is unacceptable. Please keep your fences mended and your dogs on leashes.
that is so sad, my deepest sympathies to Goldilocks family.
Was the cat also unattended and off its property?
I see a lot of strays around the area who just wonder yard to yard.
Im definately sorry about your cat, but cat owners are also just as, it not more lax about letting them roam free….
I have two Huskies and have to watch them nonstop when it comes to escaping and killing woodland animals (squirrels, raccoon, etc) and cats. We only walk on a leash, but with the amount of outside cats in the area, sometimes they can spring up on you before you see them…especially at night. We’ve had a few run-ins that I was lucky enough to untangle. Husky owners definitely need to be diligent as they are not easy pets to own! My sympathies to Goldilocks and family.
This is heartbreaking! Please keep your dog on a leash. Sometimes I get nervous when I see unattended dogs wandering the streets.
It’s really unfair for folks to handle their dog responsibilities like this. Though accidents do happen to most anyone, owning large dogs with potential to easily harm requires a high degree of diligence. And I’m so very sorry for your loss.
I called animal control on Sat about unleashed dogs growling at people walking at 35th/M. The officer looked for the dogs for about 1 minute (not exaggerating) and left.
There is a household on the 700 Block of 35th street that does not leash their aggressive dog. I have made multiple complaints to animal control and believe they have been fined or ticketed, but it appears they have continued to just leave the dog loose in their *unfenced* yard. This dog behaves threateningly toward and occasionally charges at people. I’ve had to slam my back gate on the poor animal’s face/head to stop him from getting at me. What can I do to get the city to actually do something? I’ve seriously contemplated trapping the dog and trying to find him some more responsible owners!
I totally, totally have sympathy for the cat owners. I always grew up with cats. But, I think it’s also the responsibility of the cat owners to keep them from roaming the streets. There are just too many cats roaming around the neighborhood. There are raccoons, opossums and other animals that could also hurt them and give them RABIES. Was this cat attacked on its owner’s property? There are so many cats in the neighborhood I have seen entering property where they obviously do not belong. It’s kind of like the story a while back where the 3 year old was hit by a car on a busy street- where were the parents (or owners in the cat situation)? There are a lot of dog owners in the neighborhood, church hill is known to be a dog owning and friendly community. It’s a natural instinct for dogs to chance after cats (prey drive). Between the alleys and back streets of the parks I have trouble keeping my dog from pulling away from the leash chasing free roaming cats (almost every walk). End of story, I think the DOG and CAT owners need to both be responsible. If everyone was doing their jobs and keeping their pets as expected things like this would not happen….
Poor Goldilocks! All my love to those who love her. Also though…I feel sorry for the dogs too. It’s a shame their owner(s) don’t care enough about them to keep them in a safe place. They could have just as easily been hit by a car, picked up by someone less than caring and sold on Craigslist, or any other number of things. Pets a responsibility, not a vanity item.
cats are not legally required to be on a leash. dogs are. totally different species. ticket dog owners or kick there dog. some of these new people are too lackadaisical and live in this lalaland feeling that everything is cool man, well its not dummies. be responsible. leash your dog. for its own good at least. could get hit by a car, put to sleep who knows.
That’s just the most terrible thing. I’m sorry for their loss.
Where was Goldilocks when she was killed? Was she on her own property or out and about? If you want your cats to be safe anywhere, in the city or country, they need to be contained, for their own good. It’s not just dogs who prey on them. They get diseases, fleas, rabies, etc and spread them. They kill song birds. Cat pets should be kept indoors for the sake of the community. Dog owners need to follow the laws.
Follow-up: Thank you to Mark Holmberg from Channel 6, who came up last night to tell the story of the sweet neighborhood cats on 35th St. Check it out on wtvr.com!
I’ve been very tempted to call animal control several times myself. There are at least three houses on my block that have dogs that are outside day or night, rain or shine, come hell or high water. I feel for the dogs. Mostly because I don’t understand why people own pets if they’re only going to toss them out into the yard (despite the weather and elements) and never give them any attention. Additionally, they bark constantly early in the morning and late at night which causes my own pup to get upset and worked up.
Come on people! Pet ownership is not a game! Be responsible for your furry friends and please remember that you have neighbors who are affected by your negligence!
I’m still confused… so Goldilocks was a stray who is just fed by neighbors?
And where was the cat when the dogs attacked it?
Our cat Tony was killed three weeks ago by an on leash pit mix. Hipsters be aware, these dogs are not just trendy accessories. Learn to control your dog.
Having read CHPN for a couple of years now, it seems like half the articles are about missing pets…primarily cats, but certainly some dogs too. I have never seen more notices for missing animals in a relatively small area in my life.
I have had many cats in my life. I have never lost one. Why? I don’t let them outside. An indoor cat will be healthier, safer and live far longer than an outside cat. Cats do not have a need to be outdoors. Every rescue, humane society and adoption group will encourage you to keep Fluffy inside.
When I had dogs, I was taught to manage them like small children. That means keeping them supervised, especially when they are outside, making sure they did not wander away, etc. I walked them on a leash because I was worried that one of the dogs could take off into the street and hit a car, or get into a fight with another dog, or bother someone else who was out for a walk.
Pet ownership is like being a parent. And a parent keeps their kids safe. Keep the cats indoors, keep the dogs supervised when playing in the yard (if it is fenced) and keep the dogs on a leash when outside of an enclosed space. I promise you that if you follow those rules, you will likely not be asking Mr. Murden to post a notice for your lost pet.
And yes, I do know true accidents can happen. Fluffy can wander out the door while you are bringing in the groceries and you might not notice–it has happened to me although I tend to realize it within a minute or so when it has. The leash can break. Your attention can be pulled away briefly while the dog is in the yard. But for the most part these missing animal or loose animal situations are avoidable.
How many dogs have been killed by loose cats? There is a reason the leash laws are for dogs. Actually, there are many reasons why this is the law, and yet self-entitlement to not follow it continues.
