Shift Bicycles bringing something new to Richmond

Shift Bicycles is bringing something new to Richmond’s growing and maturing cycling culture.

Glenn Amey from Artware on 18th Street is converting the bulk of the jewelry shop into a bike shop starting pretty much right now, and he wants to get everyone on a bicycle. While business is booming at the jewelry shop, most of his focus these days is on custom design work, which allows him to free up space for the new venture.

“I want people to ride their bike, with their families, with their children,” says Amey.

As longtime bicycle tourist and someone who had made cycling a part of his lifestyle, Glenn knows from experience how the right bicycle can support a family’s car-free (or car-reduced) lifestyle.

Amey wants to sell and service the types of bicycles that allow you to get out into the community and do whatever it is that you do. He’ll carry singles and tandem bicycles from Co-Motion, including the Periscope tandems that can be adjusted to fit growing children on the back. The shop will also stock longtail Xtracycle bicycles, some with Bosch electric assist, perfect for carrying groceries, camping gear, or children on the back.

For the Xtracycle curious, Glenn says that he’ll have a demo bike that he’ll be able to loan out to test on the city or Capital Trail.

Shift Bicycles should be full of gear in the next 2 weeks or so, with bicycles and the necessary add-on like tires, tubes, and helmets.
