The Richmond region’s youngest Holocaust survivor, Dr. Roger Loria was only 3 weeks old when the Nazis invaded his native Antwerp, Belgium, in 1940. After Loria’s father was arrested in 1942 and deported to a concentration camp in Poland, his mother, Dina, fled with him on foot, but they were captured and imprisoned in France. In a chance opportunity, Dina and her son narrowly escaped the Nazis again, navigating an equally harrowing path to Switzerland in 1943. They returned to Belgium in 1945, after the war ended. Years later, the mother and son made another move to Israel, where Loria studied microbiology. In 1964, he immigrated to the United States, pursuing further education. Today, Loria is a professor of microbiology and immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University.
