For the 2nd time in the three years that the event has been held, the cheerleading squad from MLK Middle School took 1st place in the annual Richmond Public Schools middle school cheer competition with a Michael Jackson “Thriller” routine.

Loretta Watson, the squad’s coach and 6th grade teacher at MLK, says, “I call them my ‘Comeback Queens.’ They mesmerized the audience.”

The 22 young ladies will be traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina later this month to watch the CIAA cheer expo, giving the the opportunity to see college cheerleaders in action and of course imagine themselves being those college students.

Also in February, the squad has been invited to perform as special guests at the amazing “Stomp and Shake” cheer competition on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. This may be the first time a Richmond Public Schools cheer squad gets to represent RPS in another state.

“The girls and I are currently conducting a Krispy Kreme doughnut sale to cover the bus and hopefully the hotel, ” says Watson. “We are also soliciting donations. If you know of any people, organizations or non profit groups that can help us with ANY donations, please let me know.”

Boxes of donuts are $7 a box, with money due by February 15. Donuts will be available for pickup at the school on the afternoon of February 18th.

Want a to help a great cause and be an office hero? Order a couple of boxes and take’em to work the next day.
