Leaf collection could start next week
02/09/2016 11:15 PM by John M
The city’s revamped leaf collection schedule says that it might happen next week. The page also gently reminds us that “inclement weather, such as snow or rain, can impact vacuum leaf collection and prompt the temporary suspension of the service.”
TAGGED: calendar
At this point, why bother? Most leaves in the streets have already washed into the storm sewers. Oh…nicely played City of Richmond. Does this mean we’ll still have to move our cars?
Richmond is now parodying its own incompetence?
for real. someone needs to tell the city the leaves are gone from the storms… is it public works?
I want a refund.
What a way to spend those tax dollars. I dont think they realize that they missed the time frame of when the leaves fell. Also, look at stratford hills….. their collection date is almost into April!! Shoot, our trees will probably be budding by then
I noticed that the lamposts in front of City Hall on Broad Street are still decorated for Christmas. I think they are operating off of a VERY different calendar. Then again, maybe those are St. Pattys’ Day decorations!
This is a good thing. Looking around the neighborhood, there are still several street gutters, walkways, and tree wells loaded with leaves. The Chimborazo neighborhood would benefit from this street cleaning in a big way.
I agree with David, better late than never. we have quite a few storm drains that are totally clogged up, some with trees growing out of them due to lack of service. I’ve reported a broken water main on Waverly street twice. Its been broken for almost a year, still not fixed. Public Works, doesn’t work.
NEW DATES: Church Hill | Fulton 02/29 – 03/04

@ David and Norman
One of the reasons for the leaf collection is supposed to be so the storm drains dont get clogged. While in some areas there are still some leaves, they are mearly mush by now. I think they missed the window of being effective to prevent clogged drains, and the collection of leaves now doesnt help with the clogged problem. With the recent heavy rains there are barely any leaves in the streets.
The problem is obvious here: The city does not have the budget and or amount of resources to collect the leaves in the time window that is needed to be EFFECTIVE.
So picking up leaves when there is not any to pick up is not “better than never” because they are utilizing resources and funds for something that is not doing much of anything…
Continued…. it would be like saying ‘its better late than never” to plow the snow after its 95% melted…. As far as im concerned its a waste of funds and resources, and the funds would be better allocated to contractors who could do it in the effective time frame window (which as we know can change by weeks, year to year).
OK… now what is the status of leaf collection we were scheduled for in December? It is almost April and still nothing – ridiculous. Will it ever happen now?
All we have is a bunch of mulch now which will be harder to get up off the street and has choked or clogged the storm drains. Is there a new calendar?
To put this in perspective…
Originally leaf collection would happen in the city pretty close together (vacuuming leaves). They started on November 30th but for some odd reason this season would not start in the Church Hill area until January 4th-15th. That never happened and rescheduled for January 18th and again, never happened. A revamped schedule then pushed it to February 15th-28th but once more, never happened and no new schedule since. Here it is approaching the end of March and April is around the corner.
Thought if for nothing else the city would take pride in the way the streets would look for Easter but guess not.
They are more concerned about brick sidewalks and crossings on blocks and intersections that don’t need them yet won’t fix sidewalks that need severe work and have for years.
Did this ever happen?? There is so much leaf and other debris along the curbs right now.
