The end of an Era

After a good run in the little storefront on Marshall Street (and even a mention in the New York Times), ERA Vintage has closed up shop. Owner Diana Mathews says that she will still have era housed in the warehouse at the bottom of the hill for scheduled sales & appointments.

Second hand stores, consignment shops, and antique stores are all hurting right now. I know of one that closed and another that may soon as half owner are selling out. Another sign of the times. People want “new” and not old. Crafts are falling to the wayside as people think they don’t have the time for them. And you can’t even give away large wooden antique furniture right now no matter how expensive or rare it once was. You also need rotating stock and a store large enough to sell a diversity of items. Era tried but those one room storefronts really need to be either opened up to make one big storefront or repurposed some way. I am still baffled how the barber shop stays in business. I never see it open during regular hours and there is no line waiting to get in while shades are often drawn (strange).
My wife and I have walked past this store many a times and she always liked their items but it was never open so she could purchase anything and I never saw a phone number to contact anyone.
@Eric Huffstutler–Ben may not operate according to standard business hours, but I can assure you he does well. My husband gets his hair cut there and it’s well patronized–just nt when you expect it. 😀
@Eric Huffstutler You should really try to stop by Ben’s while he’s open. Super great guy, with good stories. A super real dude that does a steady business. I miss having him across the street.
@Robbie, I doubt that you could get any kind of food service in that location. Those storefronts are only around 15 x 20 feet and no way to retrofit with proper food storage, cooking and venting equipment.
