Are your dogs ok?

From Lani:
My dog has been sick for the past week with diarrhea and vomiting. My boyfriend’s dogs all got hit with the same illness. Trips to the vet reveal nothing is wrong as their testing and lab results show, so maybe its something environmental.
We live right on Chimbo park and I was wondering if maybe other dog owners were experiencing similar issues??
Other than our dog is 15 years old and showing her age, nothing unusual here. Could it be that your dogs have some allergy to what is in the park? Something they may have sprayed or grass fertilizer? Or could it be pollen allergies?
Weird, do they all eat the same brand of dog food?
Someone i know dogs keep throwing up so they changed the dog food. One was almost euthanized because he had a seizure and had lost a lot of weight, but he is slowly recovering.
Our dogs have been fine. I would ask neighbors if they have used any pesticides, rodenticides, etc. I always go out and speak to anyone I see using pesticides on nearby houses to make sure if/when it will be safe for my dogs to go in our backyard and to open windows after the treatment.
Our dog is an indoor baby (Rat Terrier) who is a puppy mill rescue and doesn’t go any further than the back yard. She has been sneezing but so have we due to all of the pollen going on now.
I looked it up and it does say ” Allergies can lead to stomach and intestinal problems, including vomiting and diarrhea, and are often accompanied by ear infections.”
I am sure some breeds are more susceptible if they are scent dogs or have pug faces, which have breathing issues anyway.
No, they all have different types of dog food due to various reasons – weight issues, sensitive GI tract, elderly…
My guess was that if it was a fertilizer or chemical spray other dogs would have been affected/exhibiting similar symptoms.
Try changing dog food..?
Ours and our neighbor’s dogs (who are both around 2 and go to Chimborazo bark park on a daily basis) are both in good health…

Our dachshund-lab mix rescue had the same issue. He’s 9months old. We walk him around church hill to Libbie park, Chimborazo, etc… Had diarrhea for about a week and was throwing up food and sometimes just bile. Took him to the vet. No issues. Vet gave some meds. And we changed his diet to rice and chicken only for about a week. He’s fine now. Way too much energy.
This is allergy – pollen season. Just look at your car. People don’t think dogs can’t have the same issues as people, if not more so… especially dogs being low to the ground picking it up and smelling it as they walk? As I posted, pollen allergies can make a dog react the way you describe.
We also changed his food. He was on a simple food diet, some 6 or 7 ingredient or less food. When we got him a new bag
Once the old one ran out, he started getting sick. So we thought it was the food. Threw it out and after the rice and chicken diet for a week, we got him a new brand and it’s better.
My dog puked and had diarrhea earlier this week, I took him to the vet and the diarrhea can be attributed to some type of worms (he loves to eat dirt) and the vomiting from some sort of metal wire he swallowed that showed up on the x-ray (also probably something he ate in a mouthful of dirt). We live at broad and 26th though, and haven’t been down by chimbo recently though….
I have a cat that was sick this week. Wasn’t eating, couldn’t keep food down, and diarrhea too. The labs showed nothing either. She is doing better now. I am not sure if it is related because she was the only one of my group that got sick. Plus, cats and dogs can only transfer a few illnesses between each other. I live on the opposite side of Churchill, closer to Jefferson Park as well.
I was dog sitting for my sister’s dog in Arlington, VA a couple of weeks ago. She exhibited the same symptoms: vomiting and diarrhea. She became so weak that she couldn’t lift her head. I took her to the emergency room and she needed an IV to rehydrate. She almost didn’t make it but pulled through in the end. The dog that she was hanging out with that week also became very sick with the same symptoms. Must be something going around.
I used to use coco hulls that I got from Saurers as a mulch. They are still sold as a mulch but are dangerous if dogs injest them. Is anyone in your area using them for mulch?
The city has not mowed Chimbro Playground and they do not use fertilizers so that leads me to believe it’s food or pollen related. Also, when the company hired by the city to pull a plastic sleeve through the water line last week on Broad the process left a lot of debris in our drinking water which could have upset their stomachs due to the water treatment chemicals collected by the debris……..just a thought.
we walk our dog around that area and he got sick this weekend. vomiting, diarrhea with blood. got fluids at the vet and seems better now. i think its hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and likely infectious
Our dogs are having similar issues. I think at our place it’s a combination of them suddenly eating tons of grass, and eating blood meal from our garden. They’re doing well now, but I’ll post here if things take a turn.
My last comment is in the queue, but it comes to mind that we’ve also had a rash of people feeding our dog over the fence. Anyone else had this? It’s driving me crazy.
I worry that people are throwing food over my fence as well, and 2 of my dogs are sick with the same thing in Tuckahoe, Henrico. They were doing alright with pumpkin puree and rice. I guess I will add boiled chicken too. One dog did eat some grass at Dorey Park this weekend at a rugby game, but the other one I have no idea how he got sick. My other dogs are fine.
