POLL: Who would you choose for the next mayor of Richmond?
06/02/2016 8:52 PM by John M
We’ve launched our 1st totally non-scientific but still hopefully informative poll on the coming mayoral election. Please take 30 seconds and cast your vote.
The poll will run from June 2 – June 16, 2016. Results will be shared on June 17.
TAGGED: election
Jon Baliles but @5 I like your response LOL!
@6, really? and that would be a vote for whom? The towpath, which is currently used for….. what? Or a vote against the amphitheater, which seems like a pretty useful thing in a town that seems to like music?
I am leaning towards Jack Berry.
Anybody but Morrissey
Levar Stoney
I say anyone but Morrissey since he’s a sleaze but does anyone else running has the legitimate background to fix the mess at City Hall?
Baliles knows the system and has been solid on City Council.
@Bill Chapman; no, the mayor is not akin to CEO. There is a CAO appointed by mayor and that individual is more akin to a CEO position, so it really isn’t directly comparable. The Mayor establishes priorities, sets vision, selects an administration, creates special commissions, etc.
Baliles has worked as a staff level employee within the City and also has been on city council. Thus he knows the inner workings, players and dysfunctions of the City. That is one of the biggest issues that needs to be tackled; having someone fix the myriad broken systems, not one who promises shiny new stuff and speaks in platitudes about improving schools, and cutting off the schools to jails pipeline. (are you listening Stoney?)
Baliles. He believes in public input and is rational, ethical, knows the city and has a real stake in the city’s future. I don’t know everyone running, but of the ones “with a chance” at it, he’s the one I trust. You can probably weed out the other contenders just by testing them against the 5 items I listed. No one else can meet all 5.
Jack Berry is the only candidate with the combination of executive experience and deep, abiding relationships in every corner of the Richmond community.
I would vote for Michelle Mosby due to her experience as President of city council

Michelle Mosby
Michelle Mosby all day long 🙂 Michelle for Mayor
I find the format of the survey questions to be somewhat subjective perhaps even manipulative in design 2 secure a certain result for certain candidates. What is clear cut and obvious however is it that the next Mayor of Richmond has to not only have a business mind (not necessarily being a CEO) but be able to bring people together. They must know the moving parts, they must be strong enough to make decisions and be honest, they must have a certain amount of institutional knowledge yet at the same time have an open mind to move the city forward. If you look at it removing money removing last names and removing reality TV personalities the clear-cut choice is actually a woman it’s Michelle Mosby

Maybe it’s just me, but are 23-61 the same person just using fake names??? Seems fishy that no one during that time had a different opinion and it reads like all the comments are similar enough to have been made by one person… With that, I vote Bruce Tyler!
@Dave – The look like valid comments. Different emails, and different IP addresses.
@city resident – I gave weight to the 5 candidates who seem to have a change at winning, for sure. The names of those 5 candidates load in a random order each time. I’m genuinely curious to see that people have to say – I’m not looking for a specific result, for sure.
@62 Dave…agree. I don’t recognize any of these names being regular posters on CHPN. At the same time, has the posting regulations and restrictions been lowered? At one time email addresses and names were confirmed prior the post went live. A person could only have “one” name-email address association. Could someone now have 40 different ones and post here? Of course I am remembering rules from 12-14 years ago. Odd.
John verified they were different people. Just a fluke I guess?
@Eric – folks aren’t allowed to use a variety of aliases. I think the poll is getting shared around Facebook or somewhere a little. This is good, I’d love a broad representation.
Whoever you vote for just make sure their in the best interest, for your community. We have to make a drastic change, we can’t continue down this path if we want our youth to truly succeed in the future. #woody4schoolboard
the spam is trending mosby
Michelle Mosby is the person that Richmond needs.
Dave, I am not the same person as 23-61.
Jack Berry is the only candidate
62 Dave this is Diane 27, I guarantee you there is only one of me . I wrote my comment because I believe in Michelle Mosby. No one has to write comments that could be offensive. My opinion I think thats childish.
@72 Diane, @62 Dave seems to have been questioning the process of this super-informal poll . You consider that offensive and childish? Strange. I consider it necessary and responsible if the poll results are to mean anything.
The only option is Jon Baliles. He is logical, has worked in the city for many years and understands the serious dysfunction, especially in the finance department. He isn’t beholden to any special interest and has been great on the City Council.
Michelle Mosby demonstrated she wasn’t even capable of correctly running a City Council meeting as President, and always just went along with anything Mayor Jones supported.
Stoney is clearly just the Virginia democrat’s establishment puppet boy. Young charming, big talking black guy with a smile who can pull tons of the black vote, propped up by rich and corporate donors who aren’t even from Richmond. He will definitely have some favors to pay off in office.
Morrisey, really? I love the guy, but come on. After all the trouble he’s had, there’s just no chance for him.
A vote for Jack Berry is a vote for gentrification. He has cozy relationships with corporate donors from Venture Richmond and will bend over for them to develop the city and further gentrify downtown.
^ pretty much what he said though I don’t think Jack Berry is necessarily a vote for gentrification. At least he understands finance and economics.
Michelle Mosby! She has been a strong leader that believes in our children, and our community. Our city needs someone who truly cares about our city and is willing to make the positive changes for us to become better. She has been always there to listen, always there to help this is what we need as a community.
If a high school degree was all you needed to run the City of Richmond, then good luck to Ms. Mosby. Maybe some folks think a college education is overrated…I don’t. The “most qualified” candidate is typically NOT the least educated…

Council Woman Mosby has supported the Richmond community with all positive efforts: economic development, city school supporter, and increased national/international trade/tourist. She is the best for the 2016 Mayoral Election.
Michell Mosby. Thank you for breathing new life in the 9th. Again i say thank you! May God bless you in your future endeavors
