Site work towards the next apartment building continues at 1903 East Marshall Street — with no word on how long that block of Marshall will be kept one-way.
TAGGED: 1903 East Marshall Street
Correction… it is supposed to be a one way. I’ve seen a couple people bomb past the do not enter signs.
Any idea how close this project will be to the curb? I was pretty annoyed with the loss of the adjoining lanes for the 24th & Marshall project until i realized how close that would be to the curb.
Not very convenient for people coming off the interstate from Petersburg taking the Broad Street exit and want to go up Marshall, or the McDonald’s people heading home to Church Hill. You either have to go up to Mosby and back down or try to make a left on Broad against traffic. They need to make provisions for people heading East, if nothing more than a light on Broad or some proper detour routing or make 18th Street a 2-way North of Broad. It is very frustrating for residents.
Who can we contact to find out how long the street will remain one-way?
@4 i’d assume it’s outlined in their building permit and would assume for the duration of the project like the other two sites on Marshall.
John, is there a before the ‘before’ picture available?
I want to be nostalgic for what is gone.
I heard a rumor this weekend… mind you there was wine involved when I heard it… that VCU/MCV is looking at locking this up for students. 178 units and I can’t remember when they met w/Jeff Park and UHCA 2+ years ago, but around 100 parking spots. I almost got excited thinking maybe students w/o cars will live there. And then I opened another bottle of wine and laughed.
#7 – My thanks to a good start to the day. Comforting to know there are people who can still laugh instead of whine.
Just a reminder to those who are coming off the interstate onto Oliver Hill Way… the left turn onto Clay St is illegal.
Big sign that folks blow through school buses included.

I think the “before” is the photos he posted of the empty field and the “after” will be when the complex is built. As for what was on that block before it was a field for many years, not sure if there are photos of it but may be. The 1905 Sanborn map shows a field at N 20th and Marshall while at N 19th and Marshall, was the Marshall School built in 1887 (renamed Jefferson School in 1909) and demolished in 1972. The Marshall Street Viaduct (built in 1911) which ran overhead and torn down in the 1970s, was a hinderance for anything built along Marshall in that area.
Here is a Shockoe Examiner link to a great history of the school and its twin sister that still stands, posted here in 2015
