East End Festival continues all day at Chimborazo Park
05/06/2017 8:33 AM by John M
Last night was kind of perfect, and the RVA East End Festival continues all day today from noon-8:00 PM at Chimborazo Park.
There’s good Stone Brewing beer at the Beer Garden and good food options, including Church Hill’s own Inner City Blues BBQ.

TAGGED: East End Festival
This ersatz arts and music festival is more accurately an assault of rude, violent noise. I cannot wait for it to be over.
I agree #1 and the incredible piss poor planning is an embarrassment!!! I cannot imagine how this horrible festival can be a fund raiser! please let this never ever happen again!
I completely disagree!
The symphony last night was amazing!
@1 and 2, where do you live that it is such a problem for you? It is my understanding that they changed the way the bandshell tent faces because of complaints from last year, so I’m curious as to where you are located. Also, I don’t understand the planning being an embarrassment, in what way to you think it is poor planning? Please advise, thanks.
Dang. What is up with the negative take on this event? I loved seeing the RPS kids perform and play their instruments and really enjoyed the adorable dance groups. Children and families were hanging out and just interacting with neighbors. The symphony last night was wonderful, especially with the amazing cloudy sky at sunset.
Never seen Piper or animal lover post on here before, wonder how long they have lived in the East End….
Having police blue lights flashing in your house all night long is awful! Some people are very sensitive to strobing lights. The police were trying to deny residents the ability to walk to the dog park. No parking on one side of 36th but then allowing parking on both sides of Marshall between 35th and 36 th to create complete bottleneck and dangerous situation. When I pointed that out last year no one cared, luckily this year the weather was bad so less attendees and therefore the traffic not being able to move forward was not quite as bad. No one having a clue what was happening in the park is bad. I had many many people stop and ask me what was going on Thursday through Saturday and that in my opinion is all poor planning
@piper and animal lover
Please sell your house and or move to the country so you can have your peace and quiet. Got forbid anyone tries to do anything that helps the schools/community around here, especially when you might have to listen to it for a few hours one weekend a year!!!
And lastly, your statement describing the event as “an assault of a rude, violent noise” clearly has some derogatory undertones… yes Im calling you out! I didn’t see you making statements like this for the other loud events like st Patrick’s weekend or the other events that happen at Libby hill yearly.
This kind of attitude from ignorant community members is why many events have a hard time taking off in the hill … especially down the way of Chimborazo. There was the same kind of attitude for the farmers market…
Lastly, the event was planned very well- I personally think the rain and cold weather killed the turn out. But hey, maybe people like y’all didn’t show up because of the diversity of the line up? God forbid them to allow some young and amateur groups have the chance to play on a bad ass stage with killer sound system in front of their community…
I love the East End Festival. I love that the money that is raised goes to provide musical programs for our kids in RPS in the East End. Music programs in schools are a huge attraction for young people. They provide an incentive for good school attendance and a healthy means of developing identity. Both of our sons, now adults, found a healthy sense of belonging in middle school and high school through playing in the school band. Being a healthy community does not require that we all have the same taste in music, but it does require that we respect and honor one another in our differences and provide opportunities for our youth. We can endure the festival or relax with our neighbors and embrace it
I love the East End Festival! The music was great and I hope that some good money was raised for the music in the East End public schools. Those who feel that Chimborazo Park is their own private property are seriously missing out on being a part of an amazing and vibrant community. Please go move to a gated community in the ‘burbs if you must, but if you stay, try to smile every now and again.
My home was thumping with music and the blue light danced through the windows. The parking was tough, had to walk my dogs around the event since i could not take them in; but, it’s a public park and parks should be used by people(and animals). I will gladly deal with the music, the wonderful smells and the happy people over dog owners who let their animals run of leash or those who don’t clean up their poop. Next year more classical music and more Chimborazo elementary kids please.
Great job cleaning up so quickly afterwards. Dr. Bedden should have done a mic drop Saturday.
Please forgive me community of Church Hill. I did not know that we were not allowed to have a dissenting opinion. Please let me continue to live here.
I did not like the festival. I am not fond of people and yet, I encouraged people who asked, that they should go to the festival as it was a free community event. I was concerned for the people who were speeding down the street and almost running people over in the neighborhood. Perhaps the organizers could stop parking on Marshall between 35th street and 36th so that the traffic flows. Perhaps flyers could be put out and in Fulton too, so that people in the community who do not have the privilege of computers or who do not have children in the schools would know about the event. People should know it is free to attend and perhaps there could be welcome signs so people would feel more comfortable to attend. If you are going to do this, do it right.
Also why do we only care about the children a few days a year? the rest of the time community members seem to feel very comfortable not slowing down in school zones, not respecting the zebra crosswalks and sometimes even passing vehicles that have stopped for children.
Sorry…. Just had to post one more time and I am finished.
Quote of the month from animal lover:
“I did not like the festival. I am not fond of people and yet, I encouraged people who asked, that they should go to the festival as it was a free community event”.
I am so proud of you that you were able to step out of your comfort zone and ENCOURAGE people to go to a HORRIBLE event, especially since you aren’t FOND of people…
Cheers to this event for accurately reflecting the demographic diversity of the larger neighborhood. This is exactly the sort of event we should encourage in our public spaces.
The true diversity of the crowd, the tangible benefit to students in terms of money raised for music and arts, the high quality of the symphony’s program Friday night – all of that outweighs the profoundly petty inconveniences noted above.
