Come celebrate Annie Giles Day on August 5…

Who is Annie Giles?

As a resident of Richmond’s East End, Annie Giles has lived in Whitcomb Court for approximately five decades, and devoted her time there to make Whitcomb Court a better place to live and raise children. The 81-year-old Richmond native has been involved in many efforts including, but not restricted to: directing the soup kitchen at Gospel Baptist Church, actively registering people to vote, serving on the RRHA advisory board, and starting her own child development program called the Parent-Tot Program in the Whitcomb Court public housing community that was eventually implemented in 6 other city housing communities.

Annie Giles has been and continues to be a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, counselor, activist, supporter, and all around force of inspiration in not only her community, but throughout the entire city of Richmond.

Why are we honoring Annie?

Clearly, her work speaks for itself but with all that is going on in the world and our communities, it’s a perfect time to unite and celebrate the efforts of one of our most beloved elders. With the collaborative effort of various organizations and sponsors, every first Saturday in August in the city of Richmond Va, will now be proclaimed “Annie Giles Day.”

Organizers are looking for folks who would like to be involved in sponsoring a team for several youth kickball games that day. They are also looking for volunteers to help throughout the day. For more information, please email ourpurpose9@gmail.com or call (804)372-7156.
