Public hearing TONIGHT on proposal to move George Mason, Franklin Military students
07/31/2017 6:15 AM by John M
The School Board will hold a public hearing at George Mason Elementary School (813 North 28th Street) TONIGHT, Monday, July 31, 2017 at 6:00 PM to receive public comment on proposed options for pupil reassignment affecting George Mason Elementary School, Henderson Middle School, Richmond Community High School, and Franklin Military Academy.
Options up for discussion include:
- Keep the students where they are
- Move the students to the Clark Springs building over winter break 2017 until a permanent decision can be made
- Move Mason to the Franklin building, and the Franklin students into the Community building
- Rezone the students into other adjacent elementary schools
- Move Franklin and Community to Henderson, Henderson to Community, and Mason to Franklin
- Move Franklin to Norrell, move Mason to Franklin
- Move the students to the Clark Springs building over winter break 2017 and then build a new school
- Purchase trailers for Mason

4. Rezone the students into other adjacent elementary schools
That seems like the best option.
it is typical at rps that when a school needs to be/should have been closed/replaced, and the students/parents/community complain about the unsafe conditions, that the school board/administration will propose all bad solutions that have a negative impact on other schools. if you thought it was as bad as it could get, the school board will prove they can make it worse.
Agree with Joe – seems rather obvious. Students in a safe school day one and least expensive. No disruption to high school students.
There is no doubt that the students at GM need to be moved ASAP for their safety, but I would push back a bit about saying that it is “obvious” to distribute to the other neighboring schools. The elementary schools in the 7th district are at or above capacity, both from a facilities and a personnel perspective and are struggling to meet the needs of their current student bodies. Also, this breaks up the GM school community. This is definitely a tough situation and there are no easy answers.
