Numbers from election 2017
11/08/2017 12:32 PM by John M
- Ralph Northam won VA with 53.87%, took Richmond with 81.65%, and carried the 7th District with 89.81%.
- Northam picked up 6,431 votes in the 7th District, compared to 4,731 for McAuliffe in 2013.
- Almost 600 of those extra votes came from precinct 707 (Union Hill/Church Hill), another 500 came from precinct 708 (Shockoe/Tobacco Row).
- There were more Democratic votes cast in 707 (Union Hill/Church Hill) yesterday for Northam (1,660) than for Obama in the 2012 Presidential election in the same precinct (1,594). Hillary Clinton picked up 1,872 in 707 last year.
- The Lt Gov and AG numbers essentially mirror the gubernatorial results.
- Proposition A took 87.35% of the vote. Next up this has to get through the General Assembly, which was going to be Del. Manoli Loupassi’s job except it looks like he won’t be around to follow up.
- Antoinette Irving won the contest for Sheriff, picking up 61.90% city-wide, and 69.29% in the East End. She’s been running for the job since at least 2009.
- Nicole Armstead won the contest for Treasurer (47.05% Richmond / 45.88% East End). Michelle Mosby won precincts 702 (Fairmount/Brauers), 706 (Fulton), 708 (Shockoe/Tobacco Row).

So proud of the 707 Precinct poll workers! The super long day for these folks is an amazing commitment to our community. Thank you for your service and good cheer. With all the new folks moving in to our community, the 707 is close to being the largest precinct in RVA. 50% voter turnout for our neighborhood is awesome!
Democrats ALWAYS win in the high crime areas.
Mike, what kind of snarky comment was that? 707 is not a high crime area and has a lot of good people living there. Check your prejudices.
Virginia, high crime area
For anyone reading this who is curious about the actual numbers instead of the prejudices, the best info I can find is that Virginia is the 46th most dangerous state or, more accurately, the 5th safest state in the country. That is from this site that compares states and cities based on the 2016 crime statistics: https://lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/crime/slideshow-americas-safest-dangerous-states-2016/46/
The top three most dangerous states last year were Alaska, Nevada, and Tennessee. The three safest were Vermont, Maine, and Wyoming.
#2 Mike – Explain? #1 Elaine, yes thanks to the volunteers! Saw John over there during my visit.
Rather than crapping on Mike and his comment, who can or will speak to whether or not the comment’s true? I’d like to know…
Is what true? Do you mean is it true that more densely populated areas with universities and libraries and better-educated populations w/ higher incomes and business centers and commerce and transportation and parks and public spaces used by a cross-section of people tend to vote at a higher percentage for Democrats and also true that these more densely populated areas have crime that is higher than rural less-populated parts of the country where people may have less education? Sure, it’s true.
But what I think he really meant that places where black people live vote Democrat.
We all need to call out dog-whistling when we see it.
(am sure Mike will say that’s TOTALLY not what he meant and I am racist for playing the race card…wait for it… 😉
