Blue Wheeler will be Lee Gregory’s Alewife
Here’s a detail to update the recent roundup of restaurants planned for the area: the former Blue Wheeler will be Lee Gregory’s Alewife.
From Karri Peifer at Richmond.com:
The restaurant is Alewife, a fish-focused restaurant with the sourcing coming primarily from the Chesapeake Bay, and it’s slated to open in early February at 3120 E. Marshall St. in Church Hill, in the former Blue Wheeler Market & Deli spot.
Chef Lee Gregory opened The Roosevelt with Kendra Feather in 2011 and Southbound with Joe Sparatta in 2014. The Roosevelt was named 2012 Restaurant of the Year by Style Magazine, Best New Restaurant in the Region by Richmond Magazine and awarded an Elby as the city’s Best New Restaurant. The Roosevelt was again awarded Elbys in 2013 & 2017 for Best Cocktail Program (Thomas “T” Leggett), and in 2014 for Restaurant of the Year and Chef of the Year (Lee Gregory).
James Beard nominee and StarChef Rising Star Lee Gregory worked under chef Dale Reitzer at Acacia in Richmond, Virginia, for five years before moving to Six Burner (Richmond), Mockingbird in Staunton, and Blue Light Grill in Charlottesville.
Blue wheeler instantly takes me back to my childhood, back when penny candy was a thing. Can’t wait to try the new restaurant
Hope it is more of a crab shack vibe and less of a Hard Shell vibe.
Can I still buy crack outside?
Yes
Whew
Alewife. Jesus, Im old.
Not only outside, you can now but crack inside! Yayyyy!
Can I still buy free base supplies and expired milk there?
How exciting!!
‘‘Tis the season of giving! Thank you, Chef Lee. Our household is so looking forward to you fish-forward menu. Best wishes for a speedy renovation and another swimmingly great restaurant.
Any word of what is about to be at Venable and Mosby st.???
Back in the 60’s Fines was the meeting spot before Sunday school at Mount Carmel Baptist Church 32nd an Broad Streets. The candy’s were 2 for a penny.
Great memories then, now looking forward to the new venture.
There better be sea chanties, or I’m out!
Wow
At least you guys don’t have grandiose Ideas about where you are. Welcome to the Church of the Hill. Now with pretty buildings and cute little restaurants. Yet in broad daylight “the hill is still plotting on everyone” Josh, you do know the dealer will deliver to you when he brings the “powder” or the “lush” to your neighbor with the newly renovated house. Fear not the Hill always provides
This has me very excited! And I too hope it has a more casual vibe.
Mike Fine (Myron Alan Fine) was one of the “Fine Brothers” who operated that store for a time. Mike, an avid bridge player (and windshield repair guy) died in January 2017 at age 88. Mike would have been thrilled to see a new enterprise there. Mike’s “ghost” will be haunting the place (in a friendly way, I’m sure).
My how my childhood is vanishing. Weekends spent running around to Blue Wheelers getting popsicles, candy and SuzyQs. Change is hard but sometimes better. Hope the restaurant does well.
David Hill of course they make it cool once we leave.
The blue wheeler was awesome when we were there!
Will there be ale?
And what’s going on across the street in the new build?
I love the folks writing in about their childhood connections to this shop! There should be more of this on here.
