Tonight’s bagpipes and candle light walk has new route
12/11/2009 6:39 AM by John M
To be more inclusive of the greater Church Hill neighborhood, the Church Hill Association has expanded the route of tonight’s post-Vespers bagpipes and candle light walk. As in past years, everyone is invited to participate.
The Vespers begins at 7PM at St. John’s Church. Following that, candles are distributed for the walk to Libby Hill Park (departing St. John’s about 7:30). Bagpipes & Candle Light Walk will include a loop north from 26th Street to Broad Street, down Broad to 27th Street, south to Grace Street, and then along Grace Street to Libby Hill Park.
After a wreath ceremony honoring Officer McMahon, the walk continues to Libby Hill Soldier and Sailors Memorial where the group will sing holiday songs.
Does anyone know who the piper or pipers will be? I used to perform with a local pipe band when I lived in the Richmond area.
Wish we could go back to starting at the Grace Street western overlook. That’s how we started the walk in the first place, decades ago, and it’s a great place to congregate. (Everybody doesn’t go to the church service…)
Melinda, I agree with you!

What a shame that things change! They should stay the same forever and ever.
Maybe they stopped using the 23rd Street Overlook because all the buildings blocked the skyline view of the City?
A church is involved in this anachronistic relic of the white patriarchal past — and Celtic music??? How utterly non-inclusive. And what’s with choosing this particular time of the year for this event anyway? Wouldn’t it be healthier for everyone to do this when the weather is generally a bit milder? Where are the multi-cultural tolerance police when you need them? Well, I guess it’s OK if they’re making 100% sure that all the participants will absolutely NOT be upper middle class Richmonders of predominantly European ancestry. I see that enough in a lot of the artsy events in town. Hopefully these Wassailers will include Hindus, Buddhists, and animists — in addition to A.M.E. vocalists and Scottish pipers. Then to really celebrate, maybe we can burn down a local free market business that espouses liberty over the relentless, inexorable growth of government . . . got any nominees?
It’s tough being a white upper-middle class Anglo-Saxon Protestant these days…what with the deck being stacked against you and all. Life can be so unfair.
William Dawes.. so are you volunteering to organize the event next year…?
Things have changes in this event… the parade used to have a color guard of the Richmond Grays..
Was there a sign language person there to sign the words for the deaf? If there wasn’t, a federal ADA law was broken. The deaf were discriminated against. This “right of winter” has to be stopped for the good of all.
I love the last line in #7!
We have to kill to save it.
