Shooting in Fairfield
10/28/2010 6:59 AM by John M
The RTD is reporting that two men were shot, one fatally, last night at about 9:30PM at North 23rd and Selden Streets.
While I’m venting, I want to pose a theory that is only based on anecdotal evidence (so take it for what little it’s worth).
We already know that Richmond has the largest concentration of public housing south of NYC. In addition to the repercussions of Richmond’s unique and often regrettable history, that fact is also due in part to the demolition of public housing in the District and the pressure of increasing property values and development throughout the eastern seaboard megalopolis (not to mention the increased poverty rates we’ve experienced in the past two years).
From what time I’ve spent in and around public housing, I’ve noticed with increasing frequency that the accents of many of the residents are distinctly non-Virginian. Is it possible that even as we try to lift public housing residents out of poverty, we are receiving an increased migration of new residents from points north?
The Richmond Police Department is investigating the shooting death of Devon Lorenzo Jones, 23, of the 200 block of East 28th Street, Richmond.
Yesterday about 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired in Fairfield Court. When they arrived they found Jones on the ground behind a residence in the 2300 block of Selden Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
At about the same time, a report came in about a man being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound at Community Hospital. Officers quickly determined that it was related to the same incident.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 804 780-1000.
When Woodville was started, I bet no one ever would have imagined people would be murdering here.
R.I.P Devon Snipes Jones! you will be missed! all the violence needs to stop! we are loosing the future so quickly! what goes around comes around. So we all need to clean up our lifestyle b4 its too late!
Devon, your family will truly miss your presence. Though you carried a lot of anger inside we knew your heart was filled with love. I for one, your great aunt, will remember the times we spent together from the day you were born until I saw you last at your mom’s funeral. Maybe now someone will benefit from your demise and turn their life around. Nothing but Love for you my “Vonton”.
It’s so sad. The area was like a war zone, with shooting coming from all directions. It’s sad so many innocent children and mothers have to live in these conditions. The violence must cease! The guns must be taken off the streets. Something has to be done. I wish the police could search all homes for illegal weapons without a warrant, because it’s only going to get worst. There is a feeling of hopelessness in the city, especially among young black youth and young adults. There was also a shooting in the Mosby court area earlier that day. As the mother of an 18 year old black son, I suffer axiety each time he leaves out of the door. I’m ready to move.
