Samuels pushes to get baseball stadium location referendum on November ballot

The financial interests behind this white elephant must be very strong and very motivated to keep this ball rolling…
This citizen wants the existing stadium to remain where and how it is. Surely there are more important things to be done in this city than waste time and money on a stadium for a minor league team that seldom wins a game or draws a big enough crowd to even fill the existing stadium.
The money guys who want the stadium in the bottom will never go for this. They’d rather take their chance on getting 5 of the 9 votes they need on Council vs. getting 50% + 1
from a general voting population which is in all likelihood is overwhelmingly against a stadium in the bottom.
Let’s put it up for a vote and settle it once and for all.
This vote idea is actually the opposite of leadership. It’s the Boulevard that is our Ogendenville/North Haverbrook monorail, NOT the Bottom. Why is no one pointing out that the Boulevard is more expensive and benefits big entrenched moneyed interests more than the Bottom?
@4 – not sure what you mean by the opposite of leadership. Sounds as if you are proposing our city council just unilaterally decide what to do, even if the public doesn’t support it? I think it’s better for them to get an idea of where the public is here.
spacecat, lately the games are packed. And 2 players from the 2010 season went on to win the world series last year.
I also agree with Alex.
@#6. The stadium seats about 12,000. The last game had about 8,000. The upper bleachers are reserved for advertising banners, which reduces available seating to about 9,500. But, I am glad to see that the fans are coming out to support the team and it’s good to see that old venerable Diamond being put to good use. However the Squirrels just set a franchise record with 7 consecutive losses and their season win-lose ratio is about 50/50. I hope their luck turns around, but a new stadium for a team with stats like that? Hmmmm.
I think this article by Paul Goldman was the impetus for the referendum suggestion by Samuels…

There is also a poll at that article, and so far 69% of respondents are against a shockoe stadium…
*spacecat* is a troll. Said the same thing on FotF.
Anyway, where is the proposed stadium site in the bottom? Anyone?
@#8 I said the same thing on both sites because I believe the same thing even if I am on a different site. In fact I cut and pasted the statement to avoid rewriting it. You’re coming into this discussion fairly late twitter_davidsonrva. Do you have anything relevant to say on the subject at hand? Here’s some backstory:

This is easy the boulevard is good for the auto dependent counties. The ones that have ruined the city and are too selfish to help pay for it.
The bottom is good for the pedestrian oriented city. No one ever walks to a game on the boulevard.
The public opinion on location is only one factor and a minimal one. The boulevard location may be more popular in a plebiscite, but because it is more expensive in terms of public investment, and would be based on an obsolete model, it will probably drive another tenant (the team) away.
Here’s a news update from the recent city council meeting, including a few quotes from some of the fans in favor of keeping the stadium where it is:
